Day 1: Arrival and Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

This is a longer day, and you will trek through the rainforest zone and then enter the moorland zone. You will pass scenic views and arrive at Horombo Hut, where you can rest and acclimatize.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,700 m (12,139 ft) to 4,700 m (15,420 ft)
  • Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Duration: 5-6 hours

The day will take you into alpine desert terrain, where the landscape starts to change dramatically. It’s important to drink plenty of water and pace yourself as you approach the higher altitudes. Kibo Hut is where you’ll rest before the summit attempt.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and down to Horombo Hut

  • Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) to summit and 15 km (9.3 miles) down to Horombo Hut

Wake up at midnight for a summit attempt. This will be the most physically demanding part of the climb. The trek to the summit involves a steep climb to the crater rim and finally to Uhuru Peak. After reaching the peak and celebrating, you’ll descend back to Horombo Hut.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
  • Duration: 5-6 hours

This is your final day of descent. You’ll descend through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, where your trek ends. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your certificate of completion.
