Clothing

Proper layering and weather-appropriate attire are critical for adapting to Kilimanjaro’s fluctuating conditions.
 
  • Base Layers: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms (2-3 sets) to keep you dry and warm during cold nights and summit day.
  • Insulating Layers: Fleece jacket or pullover (1-2) and a lightweight down jacket for mid-level warmth.
  • Outer Layers: Waterproof, windproof jacket with a hood (1) and waterproof pants (1) to protect against rain and wind.
  • Trekking Pants: Durable, quick-dry hiking pants (2 pairs) for comfort and flexibility on the trail.
  • T-shirts: Breathable, moisture-wicking shirts (3-4) for warmer lower altitudes.
  • Underwear and Socks: Moisture-wicking underwear (5-7 pairs) and warm hiking socks (5-7 pairs, including wool options for summit day).
  • Headwear: Warm beanie or balaclava (1) for cold nights, a wide-brimmed hat or cap (1) for sun protection, and a neck gaiter or buff (1) for wind and dust.
  • Gloves: Lightweight liner gloves (1 pair) for dexterity and insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens (1 pair) for summit day.
  • Footwear: Waterproof, broken-in hiking boots with ankle support (1 pair) and lightweight camp shoes or sandals (1 pair) for resting.

Gear and Equipment

  • Backpack: A 30-40 liter daypack (1) for personal items, with a rain cover; porters carry your main duffel bag (Max 15 kg).
  • Sleeping Gear: A 4-season sleeping bag (rated to -15°C/5°F or lower) and a sleeping pad (both available for rent if preferred).
  • Trekking Poles: Adjustable poles (1 pair) to reduce strain on knees, especially during descent.
  • Headlamp: A reliable headlamp (1) with extra batteries for summit night and camp use.
  • Water System: Reusable water bottles or hydration bladder (2-3 liters total capacity) to stay hydrated; purification tablets (optional, as we provide treated water).
  • Sunglasses: UV-protective sunglasses (1 pair) with side shields for high-altitude glare.
  • Duffel Bag: A sturdy, waterproof duffel bag (1, max 15 kg) for porters to carry your gear (provided by Discount Treks or bring your own).

Personal Items and Toiletries

Pack light but include essentials for hygiene and comfort on the mountain.
 
  • Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, small quick-dry towel, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and lip balm with SPF.
  • Medications: Personal prescriptions, altitude sickness medication (e.g., Diamox, consult your doctor), pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen), and basic first-aid items (band-aids, blister pads).
  • Sun Protection: High-SPF sunscreen (50+ recommended) and a small tube of zinc oxide for face protection.
  • Documents: Passport (with Tanzania visa), travel insurance details, cash (USD or TZS) for tips and small purchases, and a photocopy of your passport.
  • Miscellaneous: Camera or smartphone with extra batteries/charger, a small notebook and pen, and a lightweight book or cards for downtime.

Optional Items

These extras can enhance your experience but are not essential.
 
  • Gaiters: Waterproof gaiters (1 pair) to keep mud and scree out of boots, especially on wet or summit days.
  • Snacks: High-energy snacks (e.g., nuts, dried fruit, energy bars) to supplement meals provided by Discount Treks.
  • Pillow: A small inflatable pillow (1) for added sleeping comfort.
