Kilimanjaro Accommodation

Why Accommodation Matters

Accommodation is a critical component of your Kilimanjaro experience, directly impacting rest, recovery, and readiness for each day’s demands.

In Moshi, a restful night before and after your climb prepares you for the physical challenge ahead and aids in recuperation upon return, while on-mountain lodging whether huts or tents affects your stamina for the ascent.

Discount Treks places a premium on quality and practicality, ensuring efficient use of huts on the Marangu Route and strategic tent placement on other trails to maximize shelter and minimize exposure. With years of expertise, our guides and staff select Moshi partners and optimize campsite routines, allowing you to focus on the climb itself. Adequate rest boosts summit success, and our 95% success rate on longer routes underscores our dedication to your comfort throughout the journey.

Pre- and Post-Trek

Accommodation in Moshi
Moshi serves as the primary base for Kilimanjaro climbers, offering a range of lodging options to accommodate your needs before and after the trek.

Most climbers arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), approximately 40 kilometers away, and settle into Moshi for at least one night prior to departure, allowing time for rest, gear checks, and a thorough pre-trek briefing with Discount Treks’ guides. We collaborates with trusted hotels and guesthouses in Moshi, which can be included in your package or arranged separately upon request.

  • Budget-friendly hotels & lodges, featuring private rooms and shared facilities, start at around $75 per night, offering a practical and authentic local experience.
  • Mid-range hotels provide en-suite rooms, Wi-Fi, and breakfast for $75-$250+, catering to those desiring additional comfort following a long flight or a victorious return from the mountain.
  • For a more luxurious stay, upscale lodges with pools, mountain views, and refined dining options are available at $280-$1000+ per night, ideal for celebrating your summit achievement.

We recommends staying two nights post-trek to relax and reflect, and our staff can coordinate transfers and bookings to ensure a smooth transition to and from the trailhead.

Accommodation on the Mountain

Marangu Route
The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is unique among Kilimanjaro trails for its use of hut accommodations instead of tents, appealing to climbers who prefer a sheltered environment.

Discount Treks ensures that your stay in these communal huts is as comfortable as their basic design allows. The route includes three primary stops
  1. Mandara Huts at 2,700 meters
  2. Horombo Huts at 3,720 meters
  3. Kibo Hut at 4,703 meters

Each equipped with dormitory-style wooden bunks, mattresses, and simple bedding. Managed by Kilimanjaro National Park, these huts feature shared dining areas where our cooks serve nourishing meals, and though amenities are limited to pit latrines and cold-water washrooms, they provide reliable protection from rain or wind. Solar lighting is present but minimal, making a headlamp a necessity for nighttime use.

On summit day, Kibo Hut acts as your base for the midnight ascent, offering a functional setup close to the peak. During peak seasons, the huts’ fixed capacity may lead to busier conditions, but Discount Treks’ staff manages logistics to optimize your rest and experience.

Tented Routes
For routes such as Lemosho, Rongai, Machame, and the Northern Circuit, Discount Treks provides tented camping, combining the thrill of adventure with the convenience of portable shelters.

Our high-quality, weather-resistant tents are transported and erected by our dedicated porters at designated campsites, offering a private and adaptable sleeping arrangement amidst Kilimanjaro’s rugged landscapes.

Each tent houses two climbers and includes foam sleeping pads for comfort on uneven terrain, though a 4-season sleeping bag available for rent through Discount Treks is required to withstand the cold, particularly above 4,000 meters.

Campsites differ by route, with Shira Camp on Lemosho offering sweeping plateau vistas and Third Cave on the Northern Circuit providing a remote haven, all equipped with basic park-managed latrines.

Our staff sets up a mess tent for meals, creating a warm space to recharge, and private portable toilets can be arranged for an additional fee, adding convenience on extended treks. Tented camping immerses you in the mountain’s untamed beauty, and Discount Treks ensures your setup is both secure and comfortable, regardless of the weather.
